Recognising the country’s potential, this year’s edition experienced a 19.47% increase in growth whereby brands from European countries like Italy, Spain and Germany sought to gain ground. There was also a strong presence of brands from Hong Kong, Taiwan, Japan and USA targeting to catch the attention of nearly 82,000 professional visitors that walked through the halls of Shanghai New International Expo Center throughout the 4 days in April. Exhibitors and visitors came from over 132 countries and there were over 1600 exhibitors that took up the 140,000 square meters of space.

Alongside the regular food products and commercial kitchen equipment showcase, there were various platforms for pitting skills. Beverage appreciation has leapt in recent years and in support of the trend, Hotelex included a China Barista Championship and World Latte Art Championship to find who can brew a satisfying cup of coffee and who was best in using art to heighten the coffee drinking experience. On the other end, the Cup Tasters Championship was dedicated to tea lovers while the Master Bartender Championship is evidence that more people are learning to enjoy a good liquor drink. Other competitions included Uniform Show and Buffet Display.

It was also a gathering of industry experts and practitioners in the forum aptly titled “Foodservice in 21st Century”. Subject matters such as “How Big U.S Chains and Institutions Purchase Equipment” target to help proprietors in this region apply purchasing practices accordingly; which can be related to the “Consumer Foodservice Behavior in China”. Seasoned professionals will tell you that opening an establishment is easy but keeping it on its toes is the hard part hence a talk on “Building and Operating the Sustainable Restaurant”. In acknowledging the need for more food production, speakers also tackled topics on “Centralized and Standardized Food Production Support for Large Quantity Meal Service”, chain restaurant models, chain operations collaborating to overcome recession and strategies to overcome economic downturn in the HORECA industry.
